Fig trees are incredibly easy to grow, even in a cold climate like mine. Unlike apples and pears that often require pesticides for a prolific harvest, figs are just the opposite. I've been growing a Chicago Hardy fig tree in a container in my zone 5b climate for three years and each year just keeps getting better. Hardy to zone 5, Chicago Hardy figs can survive our winters in the ground, but will die back. I grow mine in a Smart Pot to prevent total dieback and bring it in every October. It spends the winter in my dark basement where it sits dormant, receiving a drink of water every three to four weeks.
My name is Heather and I garden in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.
