Patients suffering from advanced-stage heart failure, who do not qualify for a heart transplant, now have another option. Earlier this year, Dr. James Slater, cardiothoracic surgeon, of Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute at Morristown Medical Centerl, NJ, was the first surgeon in the nation to implant the HeartMate II Left Ventricular Assist System into a patient, 71-year-old Carter Blankenship, as a long-term treatment option in a non-transplant medical facility. Here, Dr. Slater explains the device and the procedure, alongside Mr. Blankenship, who describes how the device has helped him.
