Sweetwater‘s Nick D‘Virgilio takes a look at the stunning new re-release of the Universal snare series from Ludwig. This historic line of snare drums captures the build, sound, and specs of one of Ludwig’s most defining early-20th century creations. The series includes 12 drums total across multiple sizes: there are eight with brass shells and four with wooden shells. Nick tests each size with the snare wires off so you can experience each shell’s natural tenor, and then he turns the wires on for the full effect. The result is vintage-flavored snare tone that’s ripe for retro and modern applications alike. Check it out!
