At the Crossroads - Belarus' History, Culture, and Identity
Belarus, located in Eastern Europe and bordered by Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia, has a rich history and diverse population. Initially settled by Baltic tribes, it was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and later the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. After the partition of Poland, Belarus was divided between Russia and Germany and then became part of the Russian Empire. It declared independence in 1918, was occupied by the Red Army and Nazi Germany, and later became a Soviet Republic. Belarus gained independence again in 1991. Today, it's home to over 9 million people, predominantly Belarusians, with significant Russian and Polish minorities. The majority practice Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Belarusian and Russian are the official languages. Geographically, it's characterized by flat plains and large forested areas, with major rivers like the Dnieper. The economy, while state-controlled, has industries like agriculture, machine building, and manufacturing. Politically, it's been under President Alexander Lukashenko's authoritarian rule since 1994. The culture of Belarus includes traditional crafts, literature, music, and a cuisine that reflects Eastern European influences, with dishes like Sorrel Soup, Nalistniki, Sirnik, and Babka.
