During the Civil War, General Francisco Franco merged the Falange Española de las JONS with the Traditionalist Communion (Carlist movement) in April 1937 to form the Falange Española Tradicionalista y de las JONS (FET y de las JONS). However, many Falangists quickly understood that this new party only served the authoritarian interests of Franco and did not aim to impose a national-syndicalist state by a revolution as José Antonio Primo de Rivera had wanted. Thus many Falangists were hunted down and imprisoned by the Francoist regime while he left all their privileges to the Spanish bourgeoisie.
