Six months after joining the Toronto Police Service, Constable Edward DeNobrega had a cancerous tumour in his spinal cord surgically removed, resulting in paralysis from his mid-torso down. He was given only a 10% chance of ever walking again.
Formerly a professional Muay Thai competitor and fitness enthusiast, PC DeNobrega is now an Instructor at the Toronto Police College, instructing recruits as part of the In-Service Training Program (ISTP). He has maintained his positive attitude and tenacious character as he works through his rehabilitation.
He has also gained meaningful insight and lived-experience on accessibility issues, and challenges facing persons with disabilities, which he now teaches as a part of the curriculum to officers at the Toronto Police College.
Watch his amazing, inspiring - and unfinished - story here.
