I recently did a gig with a Van Halen tribute band, and in the process of learning some of the songs, I got a bit intrigued on figuring out Alex Van Halen´s unmistakeble snare drum sound.
So I took my 6,5 Ludwig Supraphonic snare and put on a Remo Black Dot head and gaffa taped it underneath the head with a similar A pattern that he´s been known to using. I also put on a Die Cast hoop on the top side (had a spare one lying around) - so that dried it up a bit more. Afterwards, I also boosted quite a bit of around 800hz on the snare to get that "oink" kinda sound he gets and added some saturation as well. However - it doesn´t sound exactly the same at all if you compare them...but still it get´s you in the ball park and get a bit of that vibe.
I know Rick Beato did a killer episode on this very topic, and in my process, I thought it would be cool to test it out on the same song he tested it out on - I´ll Wait.
After some experimentation - basically just tuning it a bit higher than I thought, I just recorded the song and this is the first and only whole take I did, and I wasn´t even thinking about doing a cover and therefore I didn´t put up my usual camera in the ceiling, but put up my iPhone to recorded the take basically just to hear how it sounded from the phone as well. But the take I thought came out a bit cool as well.
For all the Alex Van Halen fan´s out there, I didn´t play exactly like he did, so please bear with me - and as always - usually I am inspired by the essence of what a drummer did, but try to do it a bit in my own way.
If anyone would like to have me play drums on your song(s), please feel free to get in touch.
