Radio FM88 Australia presents a 4WD journey on Cooloola Beach Queensland's, Sunshine Coast.

Entering the beach near Double Island Point from the 4WD track called Freshwater Road. This journey to the other end of the beach known as Noosa North Shore is approx 46 km (30 mile).

The best time to drive on the beach is 3 hours either side of low tide as the wet sand sand has compacted and makes it easier to slip out of 4WD and drive as if you are on a bitumen road. Driving on the beach follows the same rules as on the road regarding speed and seat belts.

Driver edict in Australia when approaching on coming 4WD's is to use your left indicator to show that you will be moving over to the left in order to avoid a head on collision.

It's also natural to slow down when coming across swimmers, fishermen, beach cricket, touch football, freshwater creeks, the ice truck.

Quite often you will come across a convoy of 4WD's that are run by a car dealership to give 4WD newbies the confidence of driving off road.

Campsites have been earmarked by the state government at various intervals along the 46 km stretch of Cooloola Beach.

Once the government gets involved you have to book and pay for a camp site and a vehicle permit to drive on the beach and or in the Great Sandy National Park.

Once you secure your campsite its common practice for Aussies to fly a flag of some description (pirate, eureka stockade, football club colours are normally the go although you may see the odd Balinese flag) and that's to let their mates know here's our campsite for the next fortnight, its a bit like an Aussie shouting out Oi or Cooee to grab your attention..

I mentioned the ice truck as you need ice to keep them beers cold and your perishables get to live a wee bit longer.

There are no fuel stops anywhere and i mean petrol or diesel, so you need to fill up before you come into the Great Sandy National Park or on to Cooloola Beach and don't even think of electric vehicles thats a definite no for this form of lifestyle.

Make sure you fill up your vehicles windscreen water reservoir before coming as you will see in the video, we get hit with sea spray and spray from the fresh water streams, it's a nice feeling to clean the windscreen as the sea spray will dry and leave dried salt on the windscreen.
