On that fateful day, James Bulger was at the New Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle, Merseyside, with his mother, Denise Fergus. While Denise was momentarily distracted in a butcher's shop, James wandered away. Robert and Jon, who had skipped school that day, were loitering at the mall. As soon as they spotted James, they decided to abduct him.
