CVD, or chemical vapor deposition, allows us to deposit diamond from the gas phase. By varying the type of methane, we can adjust the isotopic composition of diamond. Carbon-13, for example, has a nuclear spin and a magnetic moment, while Carbon-12 is spin-free, creating a clean, noise-free environment around our color centers.
For sensing applications, we enrich our diamond with Carbon-12 to maximize the coherence properties of our spin systems. Achieving this requires outstanding process accuracy below 1 nanometer, which we accomplish by combining ion implantation with layer-by-layer deposition of isotopically purified diamond. Finally, we apply a bake-out process at around 1000 °C to create the NV centers.
At diatope, we think from the customer's perspective. We use the same quantum protocols to characterize our diamonds and NV centers as our customers use in their applications. The insights from these realistic benchmarks help us optimize our fabrication steps to achieve the required properties.
