While testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano changed her tone on illegal apprehensions saying they are the same today as they were one year ago- despite previously claiming they're at 40-year lows.
"Overall, apprehensions have stayed the same with respect to the southern Rio Grande Valley, where we have had an increase primarily in illegal immigrants from Central America, not from Mexico," Napolitano told Sen. Ted Cruz. "I can kind of give you chapter and verse on what's being done there, but it's basically the same in all the sectors except for that one geographic area."
However, earlier this month Napolitano told reporters in Houston that illegal apprehensions are at 40-year lows, a much different claim than the one made today.
"I can tell you having worked that border for 20 years, it is more secure now than it has ever been. Illegal apprehensions are at 40-year lows," Napolitano said.
Despite both claims, reports from early April show illegal apprehensions are up 13% from last year.
