In this episode we taste a Zweigelt, an under the radar grape that needs to be renamed. These wines can be light, fruity and a great alternative to Pinot Noir, Gamay (Beaujolais) and Barbera. While this wine was quite underwhelming I do recommend that you consider Zweigelt bottles.
Doing so does mean that you are sort of OK with the grape name, which is shrouded in some controversy since it is named after Fritz Zweigelt, a noted supporter of the Nazi party.
The good folks in Austria realized that change was needed and discontinued an award named after him in 2015 but the broader Austria wine market is still in the considering phase for any rename. Hopefully they make a change soon and put the sordid past of the scientist who found the grape in the rear view mirror.
Enjoy!
