GLENWOOD SPRINGS, CO – Mountain Biking the Lightning Bug Trail.
We’re paying a short visit to the new Lightning Bug Trail in Glenwood. If South Canyon is known for anything, its wildfires. The 1994 deadly South Canyon Fire tragically took the lives of many firefighters, though that incident occurred north of the Colorado River. In 2002, the Coal Seam Fire originated in South Canyon, an improbable start where vegetion eroded off a slope and fell into an actively burning coal seam before. The remnants of both fires remain, but the area now hosts new promise in mountain biking.
Tramway, Lightning Bug, and Coal Camp are just the beginning in this scenic area covered in Oak Brush and Douglas Fir. However, our star in this round is Lightning Bug, a flow track that is the real PBR. Doubles, tables, pumps and rollers really stand out above all else. Its an exhausting and involved downhill that worth multiple laps. Don’t be shy about breaking out the short travel 29ers or the hardtails for this one. Lightning Bug zaps your speed in multiple areas and I honestly struggled through much of it.
My advice, commit to multiple laps, stay out of the mud, and give an A+ effort to clear the features.
