Fuel Economy
The 2023 Nissan Z with the manual transmission is estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency to return 18 mpg in city driving and 24 mpg on the highway. The nine-speed automatic increases the estimate to 19/28 mpg city/highway.
The Toyota Supra beats those automatic figures by 2 to 3 mpg. Not surprisingly, the V8-powered muscle cars are thirstier, with the Mustang estimated at 15/24 mpg city/highway, regardless of whether you go with a manual or automatic transmission. The Camaro is rated at 16/26 mpg with its 10-speed automatic transmission; the manual drops highway efficiency to 24 mpg.
Interior
Inside, the Z's dashboard receives the biggest upgrade for 2023. The central infotainment touchscreen is larger, and its glossy surface helps to make it look more modern than before. The old analog gauges have been replaced by a sleek digital display that delivers more information with ease. A new steering wheel sports fresh piano-black buttons and switches.
Unfortunately, that's where a lot of the Z's improvements end. The top of the dash, the door panels, and the center console all seem to be carried over from the dreadfully outdated 370Z that debuted in 2009. The climate controls are decidedly old-school, with three wobbly plastic dials while every other button (except for the steering wheel's) is pulled directly from last-generation Nissans. The center console features the same flimsy and hard plastic as its predecessors.
There is adequate space for taller drivers, and the seats are cushioned for long-distance comfort while also providing ample lateral support from the side bolsters. In the Performance trim, the seats feature power adjustments, but only for forward/backward travel and seatback recline. Other adjustments such as seat cushion angle and lumbar support are still manual via plastic knobs and levers. Road noise is noticeable and can get intrusive when driving on coarse asphalt. Engine noise is ever-present but is enjoyable enough to encourage more spirited driving.
The door pockets, cupholders, and center armrest bin are on the small side when compared to other coupes in the class. There is a convenient rubberized tray to keep your phone from sliding around, and there are two open bins behind the seats, though access is a bit awkward. The Z's cargo-limiting 6.9 cubic-foot trunk is small for any vehicle. Bulkier items might fit under the hatch but will block your rearward view.
