In an interview at CEDIA 2023, Mark Henninger of Sound & Vision spoke with Richard Litofsky, co-founder and CEO of MAD VR Labs, about their flagship product, the Envy Extreme mk2. The device aims to revolutionize the concept of motion interpolation, and a sub-category of that perhaps best referred to as "judder cancellation," by using AI-based algorithms. The Envy Extreme mk2 features a powerful GPU for AI processing, new cooling systems, and a five-year warranty, offering a solution to motion blur and artifacts that commonly plague various display technologies.
Litofsky explained that their Motion AI allows for a fine-tuned approach to resolving the issues caused by sample-and-hold technology in modern displays. Unlike the traditional "low, medium, high" settings for motion interpolation, Motion AI offers nuanced control, akin to adjusting water temperature in a shower. This allows users to maintain the cinematic quality of films while reducing motion blur.
The device is compatible with all modern display technologies, with the exception of DLP-based displays which are less prone to motion blur or judder. Litofsky emphasized the need for such a device, especially as home theater systems aim to replicate commercial cinematic experiences, which are mostly delivered through fast-operating DLP technology that minimizes motion issues.
Given the rise of 4K sports broadcasting, Motion AI can also fine-tune the display to achieve an almost cinematic look, enhancing the overall viewing experience.
Finally, on the topic of pricing, the Envy Extreme mkII comes with a hefty price tag of $15,995, targeting users with premium displays who seek to optimize their viewing experience. A lower-tier version, the Envy Pro mkII, is also available at $9,495. Both are designed to counteract motion blur and artifacts, significantly improving the picture quality on premium home theater systems.
