A thrilling conclusion capped the first NFL playoff game ever held in Nashville with the Titans prevailing 22-16 over the Buffalo Bills in an AFC Wild Card game at Adelphia Coliseum. Trailing 16-15 with 16 seconds remaining, fullback Lorenzo Neal fielded Steve Christie’s high and short kickoff before handing the ball to tight end Frank Wycheck, who lateralled the ball across the field to a wide-open Kevin Dyson. The second-year receiver streaked 75 yards in front of an ecstatic Titans bench and into the end zone, giving Tennessee a 22-16 lead that held up after referees confirmed via replay that Wycheck’s pass was, in fact, a lateral. The victory advanced the Titans to the AFC Divisional round the following week at Indianapolis.
