Yes, you can! However, you need to meet several requirements:
- your car can stay in Turkey for a maximum of 730 days (2 years)
- to enter the country by car with foreign license plates, you need to stay abroad for at least 185 days in total in the past 12 months
During the two years, having arrived in Turkey in your car, you can leave and enter the country an unlimited number of times, but not by car. The car has to be left in Turkey.
Moreover, during your absence, no one can use the car. If you do not comply with any of these requirements, you will be fined.
When leaving the country by car imported earlier, the remaining period of stay of the car in the country is cancelled.
In order to re-import a car into Turkey, you will have to go through the whole procedure again, including confirming your stay abroad for at least 185 days last year.
In order to come to Turkey by car, you will need the following documents:
- certificate of ownership of the vehicle
- valid insurance
- passport
- pension certificate (+ translation certified by the consulate)
You do not need to pay when taking your car to Turkey. The import procedure does not involve any fees.
How to take a foreign car to Turkey?
Foreigners with a residence permit in Turkey need to have an international driver's license and a green card (an International Motor Insurance Card). These documents allow you to travel around the country for two years.
But, within this period, you can continuously stay in the country for only six months. Then you need to leave the country, and after a while return again.
It is better to check the information on the duration of continuous stay, as well as the period of staying outside the country at the customs authorities, as the allowed periods may change.
When you cross the Turkish border, you receive a Foreign Vehicles Temporary Entry Carnet. Each time you cross the Turkish border, one ticket will be taken from the carnet.
Foreign motorists must renew their carnets annually (for some categories of foreigners - every two years). The extension procedure is quite simple:
- contact the Turing Bureau for an application form
- pay the fee
- submit the application form to the customs office
- get a mark on the Foreign Vehicles Temporary Entry Carnet
An imported car is registered in the same way as cars bought in the domestic market. Inspection is also carried out according to the local rules.
Who can drive the imported car?
There are several categories:
- spouse, parents, children of the owner of the car (if the owner has a residence permit)
- spouse, parents, children of the owner of the car (when imported by the owner with a work permit)
In an emergency, anyone can drive a car, provided that the owner of the vehicle is in the car.
Where can you leave the car in Turkey when leaving the country?
Foreigners staying in the country with a tourist residence permit can leave the car under the supervision of customs authorities when temporarily leaving the country.
It is also allowed to export vehicles abroad NOT by the owner by proxy.
Now you know how to bring your car into Turkey! Have a good trip!
