Lets talk about how we can do keyword research for free. Before we dive deep into that we also want to cover what makes a good keyword so lets get into that.
So what makes a good keyword? Well we’re basically after 3 main metrics
1. Volume
This is basically just a fancy way of saying how often people are searching for that specific term. So obviously the more people are searching for a specific keyword, the more business you will get, but also the more competitive it is because more people are fighting to be at the top of that keyword.
So if we’re starting out we’re ideally looking for keywords that are high in volume, where it isn’t super competitive but what does it mean when a keyword is competitive? you’re going to be hearing this term a lot in the SEO space.
2. Competition
This is a bit more complex topic, but it basically has to do with how much authority do your competitors have for that keyword. We determine authority in SEO with this idea of backlinks which we will talk about later on in this mini-course, all we need to know for now is that the more competitive a keyword is, it means that you have competitors out there that have a lot more high-quality backlinks than you and that keyword will just be harder to rank for.
If we have a brand new website we need to look for keywords that are between 0-10 - 10 being quite complicated.
3. Content
Once we’ve passed the first two checks we want to just quickly take a look at the content that our competitors have created and see if theres anything maybe that they’ve all missed out or if there is something new we can apport to this keyword
So these are the 3 main things we’re looking for:
1. A decent amount of volume - i’d say anything above 100 clicks a month is great for a new website
2. Low competition - keyword difficulty of 0-10
3. We want to try and see if we can add something new to the current results / new angle /
So - How do we find these keywords??
Well for starters those initial keywords should be pretty easy, they should be the keywords that are closest to your business.
So if i’m a divorce lawyer in New york the main keywords id be looking at targeting are things like "Divorce lawyer in NY" and other similar variations.
If you aren’t too sure I would check your competitors and see if theres any obvious patterns that you can find in their content, it'll be quite obvious what keywords they're targeting.
