A very important phase in the cognitive development of a baby is the appearance of separation anxiety and stranger anxiety. By the age of seven to nine months, a baby seems to be clinging more to the mother, may wake up frequently at nights asking for feeds although he is not really hunger. This is simply to reassure himself that mother is around.. nnStranger anxiety begins to appear at nine to ten months when a baby is afraid or appears to be afraid of any new person and refuses to go to that person. These are normal developmental milestones and it is reassuring when it appears because it tells us that the brain development is happening in the right direction and it usually disappears by eighteen months to twenty four months when the baby is more friendly towards others and starts to mingle.. nnSeparation anxiety is often mistaken by parents for excessive hunger at nights and they try to feed the baby, give excess milk and put the baby back to sleep and also tend to ask the doctors what other milk can be given.
If a baby's growth is normal, weight gain is adequate, waking up for small feeds and goes back to sleep, then its just separation anxiety and all that is needed is reassurance..
