#853 (or #956 in North America) - Car Chassis was the flagship set in 1977 of the Technic line. It was the year when Lego introduced the new sub-theme, under the name of "Technical Set" (or "Expert Builder" in North America), which later was renamed to Technic in 1984.
853 was the first "supercar", the great grandfather of the 42083 Bugatti Chiron. It was the biggest Technic set back then, both in terms of the dimension of the finished model and the brick count.
The A model is a chassis of a 4 seater car, featuring, for the very first time, a working 4 cylinder in-line reciprocating engine. The car is rear wheel driven, through a 2 gear transmission.
There was a hint in some of the early building instructions booklets, that a body could be fashioned for the car from the 852 Helicopter set and the 871 supplemental set.
Also, a 6 cylinder boxer engine could be fitted in the back, from the 858 Auto Engines set.
The B model was a go-cart, with a rear mounted, 2 cylinder in-line engine (but there was no transmission).
On the box, there were inspirational images to tease the imagination of the builders, including a lathe, a scissor lift, a jeep, a dragster and a truck, all of which could be built from this single set.
