Lead poisoning’s deleterious effect on young children’s brain development is thoroughly established. This is largely why the United States banned lead in paints and gasoline in the last quarter of the 20th century. Today lead persists in the environment and older homes and fixtures. Jacksonville's former industrial center is among Florida's most contaminated areas. The lead poisoning rate here is more than double the statewide rate.
