(12 Mar 2018) On Monday Austria commemorated the 80th anniversary of its annexation by Nazi Germany with an event in the very building where Adolf Hitler had announced the integration of the country into the German Empire.
Austrian president Alexander Van der Bellen said the day eighty years earlier - better known as "Anschluss" - opened "the darkest chapter in the history of our country."
Austrian chancellor Sebastian Kurz said it was Austria's job to fight anti-Semitism "irrespective of whether it has been amongst us for a long time or whether its has been imported recently."
