Difference between a direct drive and belt drive pressure washer pump. For more information, call Dan Swede at 800-666-1992 or email sales@hcsclean.com.
Belt driven pumps can rotate up to one million less times day, compared to a high speed direct drive pump. Rotational speed is measured by RPM's or Rotations Per Minute, this is when a pump or motor make one complete 360 degree rotation.
I will try to explain it this way, think of driving your car or truck on highway at 65 (MPH) miles per hour that is stuck in 1st gear. You can only image the damage that you would do to your vehicle. That is what it is like for a high-speed direct drive pump day after day. Belt drive pumps are just the opposite; they are compared too driving in 5th gear when on a highway no problem, everything is running at a low RPM.
The normal operating temperature of air-cooled engines like Honda, Kohler and Vanguard is around 350° to 400° degree Fahrenheit. That extreme amount of engine heat transfers directly into the pump. That is enough heat to cook a turkey in a few hours. Think of leaving your pump in an oven set at 350° F. for hours, scary thought! Belt drive pumps have no extreme heat transfer problems. The pump is not connecting directly to the engine or is it in the path of 350° F. airflow (air-cooled engine). Air is drawn in from the front recoil side of the engine and then passes over the outside cooling fins of the engine and exits around muffler side of the engine at around 350° F. plus. Take a look at a belt drive pressure washer you will see how pump is isolated from the heat of the engine.
Vibrations from the direct drive pump mounted to the engine also can increases pump wear and can often damage the crankshaft of the engine. Very often when we pull pumps off the engines the crankshaft keyways are damaged, some pumps actually fuse themselves to the engine.

We are a licensed reseller of high quality pressure washing equipment. HCS offers an extensive line of mobile hot and cold water pressure cleaning systems for commercial & residential cleaning contractors.
• Landa
• Hydro-Tek
• Ramteq
• Pressure Pro
• FMS
Our powerful two-step detergents and UL-approved mobile two-step equipment helped to establish the two-step mobile and stationary fleet-wash industry. The two-step process allows 1 or 2 washers to remove road film (dirt particles magnetically bonded to the surface by an electrostatic charge) in a fraction of the standard time without brushing. This vastly reduces labor costs, insurance costs, and equipment wear and tear. It also prevents undue wear from brushes on the surfaces of your vehicles to leave them clean and radiant.
