Welcome to the first episode of our Van Life Georgia four-part series. Up until now, all of our Georgia adventures had been on two feet, hiking across the spectacular Caucasus Mountains, or in a 4x4 off-road camper, exploring remote corners of the country. We’d seen a lot in our 15 months in Georgia, but one part of the country remained a mystery to us - The Black Sea Coast. Its reputation precedes it - some love it, some hate it - and quite frankly we weren’t sure if it would really be ‘our thing’. But when we heard of a newly converted campervan available for hire in Tbilisi, we knew that if there was one way we should explore Western Georgia, this was it.
We set off on our 2 week adventure in The Traveling Den at the start of June, heading west for a slow travel journey around Samegrelo, Guria, and Adjara.
Our first stop was at the ancient cave town of Uplistsikhe near Gori, a fascinating place to wander and a great spot for our first wild camp with the van. Archaeologists have found evidence of the site being inhabited since as early as the 2nd millennium BC, and the cave complex is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. Living quarters, ceremonial halls, basilicas, wine cellars, and more can be found hewn from rock at the complex, with footpaths, passageways, and a wide ‘road’ connecting them all.
Next up, we travelled to Martvili, specifically for a much-anticipated visit to Karma Hostel. We’d heard many great things about this countryside hostel run by three friends from Belgium and Poland. We loved it from the moment we arrived at the gate. Little did we know at the time that this would become our home in Georgia, returning multiple times for extended stays in the following months.
We spent a few days relaxing, feasting, and exploring the canyons and waterfalls of Samegrelo, before dragging ourselves away from Karma to head to Kolkheti National Park and (at last!) the Black Sea Coast.
