One of the most coveted pink diamonds in the world was auctioned today (7 October) in Hong Kong for HKD 453 million ($57.7 million)
The gem is a rare 11.15-carat Fancy Vivid Pink Star diamond from the Williamson Mine in Mwadui, Tanzania.
STORYLINE:  
It's the size of a small birds egg and it's no surprise this diamond is called a Fancy Vivid Pink Star, the light sparkles and dances around it.
The diamond fetched HKD 453 million ($57.7 million) here at the Sotheby's auction house in Hong Kong on Friday (7th October 2022).
The diamond is a rare 11.15-carat Fancy Vivid Pink Star diamond from the Williamson Mine in Mwadui, Tanzania.
The mine, which is one of the oldest in the world, is famous for producing saturated pink diamonds, according to Sotheby's.
The auction house says pink is one of the rarest colours to occur naturally in diamonds and only the smallest proportion of the miniscule number classified as pink, are of strong enough colour to classify as 'Fancy Vivid Pink'.
Also most are relatively small in size weighing less than 10 carats so this one is considered a rarity.
This Williamson Fancy Vivid Pink Star is the second largest vivid pink diamond with internally flawless clarity ever to be offered for sale at auction according to Sotheby's.
This 'Fancy Vivid Pink' was first unveiled in London and toured Dubai, Singapore, Taipei before arriving in Hong Kong where it was auctioned today (7 October).
The stones are especially popular in Asia according to Regine Ngan, Asia Director and Head of Jewelry Department of Sotheby's.
She says: "Pink diamonds are already really rare, and especially the Williamson Pink Diamonds. It is a very rare occurrence. It is the largest over 10 carat Fancy Vivid Pink IF to ever appear in auction."
The largest is a 59.60-carat flawless vivid pink diamond which originated from the same mine was auctioned in 2017.  
Ahead of the auction, Ngan said the auction house was expecting some important private clients who are bidding from Asia.
