Automotive exterior lighting has been around since before the “horseless carriage” had been invented.
From oil burning lanterns, to the latest in technology
utilizing lasers as headlamp sources, the primary
function is simple: to see, or to be seen.
Unfortunately, the reality of implementing lighting on
vehicles has grown extremely complex. And although most people take lighting performance for granted until someone flashes their high beams at them in frustration, the design, production, and testing of automotive exterior lighting is a huge industry in itself. And in much the same way that brakes and seatbelts are taken for granted but provide an absolutely necessary safety function, automotive exterior lighting is considered one of the most important safety features on a vehicle. Both to the occupants of the vehicle, as well as the traffic
and pedestrians that share the road with it. STS continues to develop products ahead of the curve for the continuous changes regarding safety in the lighting industry, from laboratory testing to
performance based testing – including the new technology of camera-based photometry.
