Greek police on Thursday (December 6) clashed with protesters in Athens taking part in a demonstration to mark the 10th anniversary of the killing of a teenager by police.

Protesters hurled stones, firecrackers and petrol bombs at police in central Athens where the teenager was shot dead. Police responded with volleys of tear gas, stun grenades and two water cannons.

Earlier, hundreds of protesters held a march in the memory of 15-year old Alexandros Grigoropoulos, who was shot dead on the street by a police officer in 2008. His killing sparked Greece's worst riots in decades that lasted for weeks.

Commemoration marches each year often spark clashes between protesters and police.

More than 2,000 police officers were deployed for the demonstration.
