(28 Jul 2020) JASMINE JORDAN USES HER DAD'S INFAMOUS 'CRYING MEME,' BUT ONLY PRIVATELY
With the ESPN documentary 'The Last Dance' arriving on Netflix earlier this month, the renewed interest in Michael Jordan the athlete has been steady.
But what's also captured the attention of social media is the number of memes the docuseries has created.
"It's funny. Like obviously, he doesn't love it that much. And there's no avoiding it," said Jasmine Jordan, oldest daughter of Michael.
The "Crying Jordan" meme took the internet by storm and it became so popular that entire articles were devoted to the subject. The meme was created from a photo of the basketball icon shedding tears during his Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinement, and is usually shared when a social media user expressed disappointment, no matter how serious or silly.
"He understands like, 'Jeez, he can't make a face without it becoming a meme.' And obviously, like the crying meme for five, six years, it's like, 'Ok, are they ever going to be done with this?' And then four months later, you end up doing another crying meme. So it definitely bothers him. But I think now he knows to just let it roll off his back. Me, I find it funny,' said Jasmine.
"I'm like, 'Dad, you are just really animated. And I don't think people expect that of you.' So I love it. I think it's funny. And it again, just reminds everybody that hey, he's expressive and just like everyone else."
However she has refrained from using it herself online.
"I don't post them on social media, no. I do not," said Jasmine. "I don't need to keep on adding fuel to the fire or making it go viral, because then that's going to be a huge story: 'M.J.'s Daughter Uses the Crying Meme: Is He Upset By it?"
"But I've definitely used it in some internal text messages, though. I have no shame in admitting that."
"The Last Dance" is now streaming on Netflix and available on the ESPN app.
