Session Notes
Taal
Taal literally means "to clap". North Indian Classical Music has one of the most evolved and intricate systems of rhythm and Taal is its metric of time. Taal is a system of dividing musical time into a circular pattern - a rhythmic cycle of a fixed number of beats whose grouping and accentuation give to it a particular character and movement. Tabla is the instrument of choice for the current Khayal style of music. With its dense vocabulary of producible sounds, the taal has a highly sophisticaed medium of expression.
Taal can be played in various Laya (speeds). Compositions usually define 5 typical layas for playing the taal:
Ati Vilambit (very slow tempo)
Vilambit (slow tempo)
Madhya (medium tempo)
Drut (fast tempo)
Ati Drut (very fast tempo)
Some of the typical feature of Taal are:
Matra: Beats per cycle
Khand: Sub-groups into which the beats are divided
Sam: The first and most important beat of the rhythm cycle.
Tali: An important beat in the rhythm cycle typically indicating a change in khand and dnoted by "clap" of the hand
Khaali: An important beat in the rhythm cycle typically indicating a change in khand and denoted by a "wave" of the hand
Bol: Bol is the set of syllables of the mneumonic system where each stroke of the drun has a syllable attached to it. Each taal is defined by a set of bols.
