China has finished building a 195km-long undersea pipeline, the longest of its kind in the world, in the South China Sea. The pipeline will support a gas field in the western part of the sea, and is expected to transport natural gas to South China after it goes into operation. Each steel tube measures 80 cm in diameter and weighs 12 tonnes. The pipeline lies some 100 meters below water’s surface. China's first indigenous deep-water pipe laying crane vessel, Haiyang Shiyou 201, carried out the project. The completion of the project took more than five months.
