It is time to work on the pond a bit. The bulk of the leaves are still on the trees, so if you have not placed a net over your pond, you should do so this weekend. Keeping the leaves out is way easier than removing them from the water. Also too many leaves in the pond will cause harm or even death to the fish and frogs.
We also need to switch to Autumn / Winter Prep beneficial bacteria. Autumn / Winter Prep is specially formulated for pond winterization. Prep will reduce buildup of dead organics all winter long. Autumn / Winter Prep also jump starts your pond to a healthier environment come spring time. Stop using any of the summer bacteria, its just too cold for those blends.
In the video this week I cover the concepts of removing any annual plants from the pond. You can try to bring them indoors if you have the space. I suggest growing the shallow water plants as a house plant in a sunny spot. I do not but them in water. I just place a saucer under the pot and water as a house plant. Floaters usually don't make it past St. Valentines day but you can certainly try. Depending on where your pond is located and which part of town you are in, you may have been hit by frost and it is too late for the annual plants.
In the video, I will also show you how to cut your perennials down for the winter. Perennial plants are best left outside. Mother Nature has designed them to respond better having been dormant and cold. If you are not sure if you have annual or perennial plants just take a photo and let me review it for you.
Lotus are true perennials in our region, so they really do need to be outside. However they are the only plant I would suggest moving to a lower part of the pond. All other plants should be left in the same spot they were growing in all summer. I like to say no one moves the plants in nature, so we don't need to move them in our back yard pond either.
