We think this episode could be summarized as a character building experience. Last episode we left the mountains unexpectedly because our heater failed in the middle of the night.
In this episode, we pick up in the oceanside town of Haugesund, Norway, where the temperatures were just above 0C/ 32F, which allowed us to safely repair our heater without freezing and damaging our water pipes.
Our heater is a Webasto Airtop 2000 STC, gasoline version. Luckily, Webasto has a large distribution and repair network, and we soon found a friendly technician who could help us out.
Brian removed the heater from the van, and the technician took apart the heater and diagnosed the issues. We've used our heater for 3,000 hours in the past year! The technician showed us that the combustion chamber was full of hard carbon deposits, a sign that we have an improper air/fuel mixture. This could have been caused by the fact that our exhaust pipe didn't have a water drain hole at the lowest point, or that we had run the heater with the air intake covered in ice and snow for too long. Either way, he informed us that this combustion chamber needed replacing and that he didn't know how long his temporary repair would last. Brian learned a lot about this important piece of equipment.
With our temporarily functioning heater, we headed back to the mountains to join our friends! Follow along in this video to see what we got up to!
Thank you so much for watching!
