The ISF, or Importer Security Filing, is a mandatory requirement by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that aims to enhance the security of the international supply chain. It involves providing advance information about the imported goods. The ISF must be filed at least 24 hours before the cargo is laden aboard a vessel destined for the United States. The filing requires 10 data elements, such as seller, buyer, manufacturer, and country of origin. There are exceptions to ISF filing, such as shipments of freight remaining on board and goods transported by truck. A customs bond is typically required when filing an ISF to provide a financial guarantee for potential fines and penalties. Non-compliance with ISF filing requirements can lead to penalties and delayed or denied cargo release.
