STORYLINE
More than four years since the Taliban''s toppling, insurgent-related violence is rising across the volatile border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Four Afghan soldiers were killed on Tuesday during a joint operation with US forces in eastern Afghanistan, officials said.
Militants detonated a powerful roadside bomb as the joint-Afghan-US patrol passed in the mountainous eastern Kunar province, said a coalition military spokesperson.
The blast killed four Afghan soldiers instantly, while two more were wounded and evacuated to military medical facilities, the spokesperson said.
No US forces were wounded in the bomb which was detonated by
remote control according to local police chiefs.
Some 2,500 Afghan and U.S. soldiers were conducting a joint military operation in Kunar province, which borders Pakistan, to rout out Islamic militants linked to the toppled Taliban regime and al-Qaida.
The incessant violence is a major worry for nations deploying troops for a NATO-led force, which is to rise from its current 10,000 level to about 21,000 by November as it takes control from the United States of foreign soldiers here.
