Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon documented their real-life romance and health crisis in the 2017 Oscar-nominated film, “The Big Sick.” As shown in the movie, Gordon was diagnosed with adult-onset Still's disease, a rare systemic auto-inflammatory disease. More than a decade later, doctors determined that she also has the immune system disorder CVID (or, common variable immunodeficiency), which hinders her body from making antibodies on its own. So, while many declare that the pandemic is over and mask mandates lift, Gordon and Nanjiani are reminding the public that immunocompromised folks remain vulnerable to COVID-19.

In this episode of “The Unwind,” Gordon and Nanjiani discuss their newly launched podcast, “Staying In With Emily & Kumail,” in which they discuss lockdown life and work through their emotions about being isolated. While Nanjiani remains vigilant — he readily admits being a mask enforcer on sets and in public spaces.
