Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., gave opening remarks March 21 as the Senate Judiciary Committee kicked off its Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.
“The American people want a Supreme Court justice who will protect their families' freedoms, not allow government overreach into private family decisions,” Blackburn said.
She asked Jackson, “What’s your hidden agenda?” and suggested it might be to expand the Supreme Court or "let violent criminals, cop killers and child predators back to the streets."
Blackburn's comments echoed some of the Republican resistance to Jackson's nomination, including her work as a public defender, which critics believe could make her "soft on crime" from the bench.
Jackson was nominated by President Joe Biden in February to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. If confirmed, she will be the first Black woman on the high court.
