Medstar Health, a large healthcare provider that owns and operates 10 hospitals across Maryland, Washington D.C and northern Virginia, has notified authorities and patients that the personal information of around 184,000 individuals had been exposed in a data breach.

The hackers managed to infiltrate the email accounts and files of three Medstar employees way back in January 2023. But it wasn't until ten months later that Medstar discovered the intrusion and launched a full investigation.

Patient details that were contained within the emails and files included names, addresses, dates of birth and insurance information. While no proof was found that the data was actually viewed or stolen, Medstar could not entirely rule out that possibility either.

Making matters worse, the Medstar Data Breach impacted major hospitals within their network, such as Georgetown University Hospital and Washington Hospital Center.
