Allegro moderato: 00:00
Jacques-Marie Beauvarlet-Charpentier was the son of another composer, Jean-Jacques Beauvarlet-Charpentier; Jacques-Marie succeeded his father at the post of organist at the Church of St. Paul. After the turmoil of the French Revolution had subsided, he was given the position of organist at St. Germain-des-Prés, and in 1815, that of St- Eustache. He composed mainly vocal works, but also pieces for keyboard. I discovered the present piece – a movement entitled only “Allegro moderato” – in the 1782 volume of the annual publication “Journal de Clavecin”. It seems to be either a sonata movement, or, more probably, a transcription of a movement from a symphony or an opera overture. In the “Journal de Clavecin”, the author of the work is given as “Charpentier fils” (“Charpentier, son”). First: do not confuse these two composers, Jean-Jacques and his son Jacques-Marie Charpentier, with the more famous master of a previous generation, Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704), who famously collaborated with the playwright Molière; I have found no evidence that they were related. Also: in the “Journal”, the first names of many composers are not given; pieces by Jean-Jacques Charpentier are listed as being by “Charpentier”, with “Charpentier fils” referring to Jacques Marie. Thus, we can conclude that the present piece, published in 1782, was composed when Jacques-Marie was (at most) sixteen years old. The boy was apparently quite gifted! Also note that though these two composers had in fact two surnames “Beauvarlet-Charpentier”, they usually employed only the second, perhaps desirous of “capitalizing” on the name “Charpentier”, which of course was reminiscent in the minds of the public with Marc-Antoine Charpentier.
