Where does it come from, what is it used for, and why do we find so many of them in only this place? Maybe a whole container load of this item was lost nearby at sea, or there is an offshore operation we are not aware of? We don't know. But we wonder how many more animals have fallen victim to this mystery rope. We try and visit the Skeleton Coast regularly, but we can only see seals that are on the right beach at the right time. If others are out foraging somewhere, or they are simply hidden behind another seal, we will miss it and the suffering continues. There is only one way how we prevent our oceans from becoming even more of a death trap: we need to stop using the ocean as our personal rubbish bins.
