In this episode:
I am on the lookout for a notorious species of scorpion that lives in South East Asia, the Giant Forest Scorpion or just known as the Asian Forest Scorpion (Heterometrus spinifer). The pincers of this species are robust. As nocturnal, ambush hunters, they come out to the entrance of their burrows at night to feed on a variety of insects, centipedes, and also small reptiles. During the day they remain deep in their burrows.
I come across a number of these scorpions , spotting them with my UV light. Scorpions glow in the dark! When I finally get up close with a scorpion, I have to be careful. The venom of this scorpion is known to be painful and can cause problems with vision. Luckily it isn't deadly and because of this many keep this scorpion as pets. However, as pets, they are known to be aggressive, I need to test this theory out!
It was an amazing encounter with the Giant Forest Scorpion, and one I will not forget! I now affectionately call this scorpion the Gentle Giant.

The Science:
With over 1 Million animals on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species, animal populations are in decline the world over. This is due to many reasons but what we know for sure is to keep the planet's amazing diversity of wildlife we need to learn as much as possible about where and how these creatures live their lives. Collating all the data we are gathering will help build a picture of which habitats are key to sustaining the largest diversity of life on planet earth.
