One day when I was a senior in high school, I was sitting in my AP English class preparing for a presentation I was going to do that day on the book The Great Gatsby. The presentation was going to be a big portion of my grade so I was pretty nervous. I had already been accepted into my dream college but they could always take back my acceptance if my grades faltered. I had to stay strong and ensure my GPA stayed high. I was going over my notes when I heard a loud clap of thunder. I glanced outside and noticed that the sky looked especially dark. A pretty big storm was definitely rolling in. I sighed, thinking about how I was going to have to try to speak over the thunder and heavy pouring rain.

The bell rang, signifying the start of class. My teacher was looking over the list of people who were going to be presenting that day. I was second on the list. This was good news for me. This way I would be able to get it over with and wouldn’t have to sit there nervously the whole class. The girl who was in front of me headed up to the front of the class and began to plug her laptop up to the projector and set up her presentation. There was an especially loud clap of thunder and suddenly, all the lights went out and the projector screen went dark. Several people gasped and we looked around expectantly, waiting for the lights to come back on. Nothing happened.

The room was completely dark except for a small emergency light in the center of the ceiling. Because of the dark sky, there was very little daylight coming in through the windows. “It seems that the storm has done something to the generator,” the teacher said, annoyed that the plans for class that day had been disrupted. After several minutes went by, the principal came on through the loudspeaker and said that it wasn’t the storm that caused the blackout. It was some sort of other electrical issue and it might be some time before it could be repaired. He said should go about their daily activities as well as possible.
