Steam whole European carp. I was lucky to catch a small carp. This is the smallest carp I ever caught. Very simple cooking. Steam the fish for 10 -12 minutes. While steaming sate some garlic and onions. Once the fish is cooked, Discard the juice. Pour the hot oil over the fish. Drizzle some soy sauce...Done!!

Fine Dining Restaurant Style carp cooking. Carp fillets cooked pan-fried. Crispy skin and tender meat. Ate with sambal belacan and chilli sambal.
Sprinkle some salt, pepper, paprika and garlic powder and pan-fried on a pan.

I wish more will know how to eat this fish. Instead of fishing to get these so call invasive species from the Australian water and kill them, we should learn how to eat the fish.

Carp (Cyprinus carpio) were first introduced to Australia more than 100 years ago. They are now widely established throughout the Murray-Darling Basin and can also be found in all states and territories except the Northern Territory (see ‘Carp introduction and distribution for more detailed information). Carp are very common in parts of this range in Australia and are considered to be one of our major pest fish species.

If only more Australians could get a taste for carp and take up carp fishing as a pursuit, it might go some way to solving a major environmental problem, Keith says.

"It wasn't the native fish in Australia and so people got used to eating black bream, yellow-eye mullet, maybe some perch, or some cod, depending on which part of Australia you came from. These things (carp) come in and they're foreign, they have a lot more bones in them and they just got such a bad reputation right at the start that people were just put off them and perception is really a bad thing.

Carp - if you can’t beat 'em, eat 'em

Carp now make up 70-90% of the total weight of fish in most of our freshwater rivers and lakes. The good news is that two average-sized carp, prepared as above, can feed a family of four. If we all ate fish for dinner just once per week, we could take an estimated 600 million carp out of our waterways each year. Who knows, a concerted fishing effort in one stretch of a river might just tip the balance back in favour of our native fish.

If you can’t be convinced to eat carp just yet, take them home for bait, cat food, or fertiliser. Please don’t leave them in the bank. After a day or two in the hot sun, they smell terrible and ruin the spot for everyone else. But if you’re a tiny bit adventurous, give the preparation techniques above a go. Or even better, try serving carp at your next BBQ - just don’t tell your friends what type of fish it is until they’re asking for a second serve.
