PINOCCHIO: WHEN A GOOD STORY MEETS BAD CGI
You know? Before seeing this movie I was completely sure that it would be complete garbage, not because I had seen the reviews since I NEVER listen to criticism, but from the teaser it already gave a bad impression, BUT... but, the truth is that I quite liked this reinvention of the Disney animated classic.
The film begins with your usual Disney story, with the introduction of the main character and Gepetto (Tom Hanks) who, after the loss of his son, decides to create Pinocchio, a puppet made of wood... who does not speak, and we see Jiminy Cricket who tells the story and well, I think it is not necessary to tell more about the plot because it is assumed that the vast majority will have already seen the animated classic, so let's get to the interesting part:
The film respects the original material to a certain extent but adding a couple of somewhat... interesting elements such as the character development of Pinocchio, who in this film (or at least I see it that way) is a little more intelligent than in the original version and that makes you empathize with a piece of wood and CGI that throughout history learns about humility and kindness, we also see an incredibly characterized Tom Hanks giving us perhaps one of the best versions of Gepetto that has been seen in the cinema since he is a person devastated by the death of his son and only wants to find Pinocchio when he is lost, we also have the actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing Jiminy Cricket who literally seems to be taken from the original drawing, we have Luke Evans to who we had already seen in The Beauty And The Beast as Gaston but here he plays the coachman, Keegan Michael Key as Honest John also does an incredible job, there is a new pe character named Sofia, played by Lorraine Bracco who is a great character, there is a girl played by Kyanne Lamaya whose purpose I really don't know was in the film since I never saw her do anything and in the same way we have Stromboli played by Giuseppe Battiston And if you're wondering: YES, the blue fairy played by Cynthia Erivo only appears in one scene so: all good there.
As you can see, we have a good cast for this movie which stands out for adding several interesting elements that complement the story, for example, #Pinocchio's motivations and the fact that the character has development makes it more credible ALTHOUGH I must say that at times it looks quite fake, it looks like a Sony Vegas doll that is a little laughable but if you don't pay much attention to it you won't notice it, something I want to mention is that my favorite character from the original movie has always been Figaro the cat, and In this new version, the character looks quite adorable and expressive, even though it's made of CGI, it's very cute and the scenes where it appears are pure serotonin.
The musical numbers are somewhat forgettable, we have pieces from the first film that are quite enjoyable but the rest of the songs are irrelevant, the Pleasure Island scenes are also great, but these scenes go by very quickly and they are not enjoyed as much as in the original and as for the final scene, was it something WTF? First we have Monstro who went from being a giant whale to being a weird octopus whale monster and the way Pinocchio saved Gepetto was quite bizarre, it even looks like a scene from Fast And Furious "only family matters, Pinocchio" or something like that, but in general, it is a quite enjoyable film with memorable moments.
Pinocchio is not the worst Disney live action but I would not say that it is the best either, although it does stand out for many things, mostly positive and I am very happy that the result has turned out so well, now we just have to wait for December and see if Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio movie manages to surpass Disney's, which I hope so, let's see what happens.
My rating for this movie is: 7/10
