Berklee Online instructor Loudon Stearns shows you how to use the built-in filtering and modulation functions in Ableton Live’s Simpler to bring more motion and interest to your music. The filter in Simpler can be placed in multiple modes, many with a Drive parameter that can be used to give the synth a more warm analog sound. The filter envelope can be used to create motion in the filter every time a MIDI note is received. Commonly this will be used to generate a bright initial transient for a sound that then fades into a smoother sustaining timbre. Use the filter envelope amount parameter to control how much the filter cutoff will change as the envelope runs. In the Filter envelope, with a high filter envelope amount and 0 sustain, Decay time will have a dramatic effect, controlling how long it takes for the brightness to go away. The LFO can be used to create repeating, cyclic change in the Filter cutoff. This is great for adding motion and evolution to a sound. Simpler's Spread parameter makes a sound much wider in the stereo field by using two voices for every MIDI note, detuning the voices and spreading them out in the stereo field. It is dramatic and similar to a chorus effect and uses twice the CPU when engaged. No matter what you do with modulation and filters, you can always try out different start points and different samples to get new timbres! Remember to save your preset into your User Library so you can easily find it for use in other projects.
