Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Japanese defender Risa Shimizu from West Ham United. The 28-year-old has penned a three-year deal that will keep her at the Joie Stadium until the summer of 2027. An assertive full-back, Shimizu began her career with Tokyo Verdy Beleza before moving to the Women’s Super League (WSL) in 2022 with the Hammers. She made 44 appearances in two seasons with the East London team, scoring one goal. The Japan international, who will wear the No. 2 shirt, has 78 caps to her name since making her debut in 2017, and has featured at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019 and 2023. On signing for City, Shimizu said: "First of all, it’ll be a challenge, but one I’m ready for. City play football with a high possession style, which I like. I think I’m technically good and calm with the ball in possession, so I think I’ll play well in City’s style. I can’t wait to get started and hopefully lift the trophy with my new teammates." Head Coach Gareth Taylor added: "Risa brings intelligence and technical quality to the team. She’s an established international with huge WSL experience and we are delighted to bring her to our club." Shimizu, who will wear the No2 shirt, will link up with her country at the 2024 Paris Olympics before joining up with City for the first-ever Perth International Football Cup next month in preparation for the 2024-25 season. Shimizu becomes City’s second signing of the summer, following the arrival of Netherlands international Vivianne Miedema from Arsenal.
