Full Mouth Extraction Post Operative Instructions (with or without dental implant placement)
You've just had full mouth extraction with or without placement of an immediate denture and/or dental implants. The teeth have been removed, the sockets have been cleaned, and the bone has been smoothed to help facilitate successful wearing dentures or placing dental implants.
Postoperative instructions include:
Please leave dentures in for the first 24 hours after surgery. Your oral surgeon or dentist will schedule a postoperative appointment to see you within the first several days after surgery. At this appointment, the oral surgeon or dentist will take the dentures out and instruct you on cleaning and care for your dentures.
Your surgeon will then see you for one to two weeks, after the surgery to check your healing and then hopefully release you to your general dentist for any needed denture adjustments.
Lots of cool fluids such as Gatorade or water are encouraged for the first 24 hours after surgery This helps aid in keeping your body hydrated, helps decrease bleeding and also helps keep the surgery site clean
Ice packs are encouraged and are to be placed up against the cheeks with gentle pressure for 30 minutes at a time for the first 24 hours. This will help decrease swelling, bleeding and aid in pain control. Please note, bruising and swelling are to be expected for up to two weeks after a full mouth extraction. Keeping your head elevated with two or three pillows can also be beneficial for decreasing pain and swelling.
If you did not have a denture placed at the time of surgery, please hold gauze pressure by biting on gauze for the first two to three hours after surgery to help control bleeding. The gauze may be changed out every 30 minutes to get something to eat or drink.
After a full mouth extraction and placement of immediate dentures, please do not be alarmed, if your dentures do not have a great fit or you are having trouble using them. your upper and lower jaws will swell and shrink over the first three months and may require multiple adjustments by your general dentist.
Denture adhesives should not be placed directly over the surgery site for two weeks after surgery. However, a pea-sized amount of injury adhesive may be placed on the palate of the denture, or the roof of the mouth to aid in holding the denture in place.
Your doctor will have prescribed you post-operative pain medicine. This usually includes ibuprofen and a narcotic pain medicine. We ask that you take the ibuprofen every six hours for the first 48 Hours. Even if you are not having any discomfort, this helps decrease swelling as well as keep pain to a minimum.
If your doctor has prescribed you a narcotic pain medicine and if the ibuprofen is not controlling your pain, you may take the narcotic pain medicine every four to six hours in addition to the ibuprofen. Please note that it is best to take pain medicines immediately after eating and not on an empty stomach.
