Located 250 kilometers south of mainland Australia, the state of Tasmania seems to lie at the end of the world. Detached from an ancient supercontinent that included Antarctica, Australia and South America, it is covered with species of trees that are unique in the world, survivors of the most distant geological past.

The natural heritage of what was once called “inspiration island” was protected by Draconian measures very early on. Today, nearly 80 percent of the large rainforest is inscribed as a World Heritage site, the largest territory in the UNESCO register. Very few people live here, just a few logging communities who love this land.

Yet this exceptional treasure is endangered; the greed of major forestry companies threatens the natural reserves, and unscrupulous lobbying on the part of industrialists has ignited a serious “tree war.”

It pits powerful representatives of the Tasmanian forestry sector against advocates working to defend this fragile environment and those whose livelihoods depend on it.
