Join Chris Smith at The Utopian Seed Project's Experimental Farm (at Franny's Farm in Leicester NC) as he takes us on a tour of the okra field, looking specifically at the okra flower, how to stop cross pollination between varieties, how to emasculate an okra flower, and eating okra flowers!
Extra Notes on Seed Saving
- If you are only growing one variety of okra then this process is not necessary, unless you have neighbors within 800 feet also growing okra.
- It takes about 40 days to go from flowering to mature seeds for seed saving (the pod should be browning and the seeds should be dark and hard).
- I like to bag a couple of buds/unopened flowers on each of my favorite or top performing plants. I am to save seeds from 5-10% of the total population for large plantings, but with smaller plantings I save from more plants to maintain some genetic diversity (again not an issue in freely pollinated populations).
Chris is the Executive Director of The Utopian Seed Project and author of the James Beard Foundation award winning book, The Whole Okra.
