After the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 concluded and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured the third consecutive term at the Centre, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget for the fiscal year 2024-25. She will become the first-ever FM to present seven consecutive Union Budgets, surpassing Morarji Desai who presented six Budgets in a row. Since 2024 was a general election year, FM Sitharaman presented an interim budget in February. Although no official announcement has been made yet, the Budget is expected in the second half of July. Taxpayers have high expectations, especially salaried employees who are seeking tax relief. Key demands include lower tax rates, revised slabs, and higher deductions. There is also a call for expanding the 50% HRA exemption to more non-metro cities. Stakeholders expect an increase in the Section 80C deduction limit from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh for investments in life insurance, PPF, FD, and ELSS, which hasn’t changed since 2014. Additionally, there is hope that the new tax regime’s exemption limit will rise from Rs 3 lakhs to Rs 5 lakhs. To promote homeownership, it is anticipated that the deduction under Section 24(b) for home loan interest will be increased from Rs 2 lakhs to Rs 3 lakhs.
