Seeing as how Ringo, Bonham, and dozens of great drummers over the years rushed fills all the time, this can’t be a terrible thing can it? Well today we’re answering that question, and I’ll share with you the #1 (very fixable!) issue that is causing you to rush your fills. Thing is, we drummers ultimately need to be able to intentionally manipulate time. That means being able to “push” a chorus or “lay back” a verse in a controlled, tasteful way. How do we learn to do this? By learning to play everything exactly to the grid. Follow the rules, playing robotically with the click - that way you can have fun and break them. It all comes down to musicality.
